Where Civilizations Meet: The History of Cyprus
Witness the thousands of years of history, cultural richness, and the birth of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus on this strategic Mediterranean island.
A Journey Through the Past
Cyprus, a favorite of empires throughout history due to its strategic location, bears the marks of different civilizations in every corner. This rich cultural mosaic, extending from ancient ports to Venetian walls, from Ottoman inns to British colonial architecture, has given the island a unique character. This page serves as a guide to the epic story of Northern Cyprus, starting from the Neolithic period, passing through the rule of countless kingdoms and empires, and culminating in the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Let's embark on a journey together into the historical depths of this pearl of the Mediterranean.
Ancient Times and First Civilizations
Since the Neolithic period, Cyprus has been home to countless civilizations such as the Hittites, Egyptians, Persians, Romans, and Byzantines. This rich history is evident in the ancient cities, castles, and mosaics that can be seen in every corner of the island.
The Ottoman Period (1571-1878)
The conquest of the island by the Ottoman Empire in 1571 opened a new page in the history of Cyprus. During this period, a significant Turkish population settled on the island, permanently changing its demographic structure. Ottoman architecture and culture left deep marks on the island with its inns, mosques, and baths.
British Rule (1878-1960)
The period that began with the Ottoman leasing of the island to Britain in 1878 lasted until 1960. During this process, modern infrastructure works were carried out on the island, but at the same time, the ideas of the Greeks to unite with Greece (Enosis) and the Turks to partition the island (Taksim) grew stronger.
The Republic of Cyprus and Intercommunal Conflicts (1960-1974)
The Republic of Cyprus was established in 1960 as a partnership between the Turkish and Greek communities. However, attempts by the Greek side to unilaterally change the constitution and the process that began with the attacks known as "Bloody Christmas" in 1963 increased the pressure and violence against Turkish Cypriots.
1974 Cyprus Peace Operation
Following the coup on July 15, 1974, aimed at achieving Enosis on the island with the support of the junta government in Greece, Turkey launched the Cyprus Peace Operation on July 20, 1974, using its rights under the 1960 Treaty of Guarantee. This operation ensured the safety of Turkish Cypriots and shaped the current political geography of the island.
Declaration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (1983)
Following the Peace Operation, the Turkish Federated State of Cyprus was established in 1975. When intercommunal talks failed to produce a result, the Turkish Cypriot people exercised their right to self-determination and declared the independent Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on November 15, 1983.
